New River City Novel!
Welcome back to River City!
Since shortly after the 2011 release of And Every Man Has to Die, readers have been asking me (some with increasing frustration) when the next River City novel was coming out. I always replied “soon” but was also working on a number of other projects (check out my Novels page, and you’ll see some of them).
But now, I can give a different answer. I guess it is still technically “soon” but that has an actual date attached to it — September 18, 2018.
On that date, the fifth installment of the River City series, entitled The Menace of the Years, will be released.

It is 1999, and the spectre of Y2K hangs over the police department. More menacing yet, officers respond to a hate-fueled home invasion robbery. As the entirety of the River City Police Department prepare for possible chaos when the calendar turns over to the year 2000, they also must stop a gang of white supremacists who plan to use that same chaos to mask their biggest crime yet. Coupled with significant, real struggles on and off the job, the men and women of RCPD strive to stop them, to do what is right, and to survive.
What are some of those struggles? Well, the book heavily features Officer Katie MacLeod, along with series favorite Thomas Chisolm. Katie relies on Chisolm’s wisdom as she faces the most difficult stage of her career to date.
Meanwhile, Sully and Rebecca Battaglia are still struggling with the events from the previous book (no spoiler here), and Detective John Tower is hit from left field with a situation he never saw coming.
Detectives Finch and Elias work on the above mentioned robbery, under the surly eye of Lieutenant Crawford.
Lieutenant Robert Saylor sees a new side of the police department. And the man we all love to hate, Lieutenant Alan Hart of Internal Affairs, has his hands full in a way to will delight some and dismay others.
For those that thought the next River City book was going to be In the End, don’t be confused. It was. But a friend pointed out that the title didn’t mesh well with the rest of the titles in the series (including those to come), and I realized that was probably why I had never really liked the title to begin with [Ha! To begin with, I never liked the title In the End]. In the End started life as a working title, and sort of morphed into the title, before my friend’s advice sealed the change for me.
The phrase “the menace of the years” is from a poem by W.E. Henley called “Invictus.” Many of you are probably familiar with the poem, especially the final two lines. And you may even notice that another River City title was snatched out of this brief piece of poetry, too.
A few more notes…
The cover for The Menace of the Years was designed by Eric Beetner, like all of the River City covers (novels and collections). He’ll continue to be the cover designer for the rest of the series, too…
…which leads me to the fact that River City readers won’t have to wait seven years for the next book. In fact, I doubt they’ll be waiting more than seven months. That’s right, book six in the series, Place of Wrath of Tears, is projected for Spring 2019 release.
It is the nightmare of every community – a school shooting.
When a disturbed teenager masterminds this terrible event, everyone in River City is plunged into the darkness that surrounds it. The students and teachers try to survive, and the men and women of RCPD try to save them. But when things go horribly wrong, everyone seems to be looking elsewhere for someone to blame.
Officer Katie MacLeod is among many who discover that the nightmare doesn’t end when the shooting stops.
Place of Wrath and Tears takes place in 2001.
This will be quickly followed by book seven, Dirty Little Town, which is set for a Fall 2019 release.
Times are tough for the River City Police Department. The city budget is collapsing, forcing an already understaffed department to contemplate laying off cops. The community is upset over the handling of recent events, and their anger is impacting the agency from the ground up. The mayor appoints a new chief to “fix” the problem, but the cure may be worse than the disease.
Worse yet, a killer is stalking the streets of River City, targeting vulnerable women. Somehow, the men and women of RCPD have to put aside all of the distractions and focus on their jobs – to serve and to protect.
Dirty Little Town takes place in 2003.
The precise publication dates will be finalized to coordinate with other titles of mine that are coming out from Down & Out Books.
And lastly, you can pre-order The Menace of the Years on Amazon or other platforms right now, leading up to its September 18 release.
