First Line — Friend of the Departed
I should learn to keep my mouth shut, especially since I was in a bar.
Sound like advice we should all take, huh? I think this first line works fine, but it definitely benefits from the line that follows: “But when you’re drunker than forty bastards, judgment isn’t always sound.”
That’s cheating, however. First lines have to be viewed all on their own. This one is workmanlike, and does its job just fine.
I’d give it another solid C.
You?

It had been a few years since I’d written a Kopriva novel when I returned to this one. I found it easier than returning to River City in some ways, but that can probably be attributed to me being a dark bastard in some ways.
Kopriva has long been dubbed by readers as my whipping boy, and while I give him some reprieve in this novel, he also pays dearly for it… so I guess they are right.
I don’t know how long this series will go, but there are at least two more coming. So if you’re a Kopriva fan, take heart.
