Today marks the release of Harbinger, the fourth book written in the Ania series that I co-wrote with Jim Wilsky.

I say “fourth written” because it is actually a prequel to the original three in the series (Blood on Blood, Queen of Diamonds, and Closing the Circle). We had finished the series with what felt like a very satisfying conclusion, but when we entered talks with Down and Out Books to re-issue this trilogy under the D&O banner, the real selling point was that we had begun a new book in the series – a prequel that is essentially Ania’s origin story.

Of course, it is still told from the perspective of two protagonists, not Ania’s viewpoint. We employed the same dual first person narrative with alternating chapters, each of us writing one of the two protagonists.

Set on the sunny Gulf Coast of Florida, Harbinger centers around two lifelong friends and fishing charter boat partners, Boyd Tomlin and Hicks Ledoux. Boyd is the serious one who always makes sure things get done, and Hicks is the carefree one who always makes sure everyone has a good time.

But times aren’t so good. They are struggling to get charters, and bills are coming due. In desperate need of money, they consider smuggling drugs to make ends meet. By chance or fate, they meet two beautiful sisters who will change everything—a young Ania and her kid sister Karolyn. Hicks is immediately attached to the brash, confident Ania while Boyd gravitates toward Karolyn.

As romance blossoms, Boyd and Hicks quickly find themselves embroiled in the world of illegal drug trade, romance, danger and violence lurking around every corner.

This was a fun one to write. Revisiting my partnership with Jim Wilsky was part of it. Discovering the truth behind how Ania became…well, Ania was also intriguing. Couple that with me not knowing a damn thing about boats except they cost money and go on water, and you can imagine Jim having to help me out on some technical stuff.

I wrote the character of Hicks, the good ol’ boy beach bum. It was fun to slide into his skin, because he’s very different than me (or at least how I feel), so writing his chapters felt like a bit of a vacation from my own personality.

You can read the series in any order, as the books all stand alone. You can also choose to read Harbinger first or last, as you prefer. My recommendation, if anyone cares, is to read it last. I think some of the twists that occur pack more of a punch if you already have the foundational weight of the entire trilogy behind them.

I’m pretty sure this is the last of the Ania series, but this prequel might be my favorite of the bunch. And like the rest of the re-issued titles, this book features a gorgeous cover from Zach McCain. I love how he uses color choice throughout the series to punctuate the theme of the individual title. In fact, this is one of the things Jim and I talk about in an Open & Shut Episode of Wrong Place, Write Crime regarding this new release.

I hope you all dig this new novel, and join me in saying both hello and goodbye to Ania…
