First Line – And Every Man Has to Die

As first lines go, this one passes the in media res test, at least. It starts you in the middle of the action, with Katie arriving on scene for a domestic violence call that ends up… well, with more violence. As always, she holds her own, though.
This opener isn’t particularly poetic, but it is workmanlike. I’d give it a solid B.

And Every Man Has to Die was first published in 2011 by Gray Dog Press. It had a cool cover, featuring Russian dolls and expended brass, a well done shot by Matt Rose. But thematically, it was out of sync with the other three in the series, which used landmark features (usually bridges) for the back drop.
When Gray Dog Press ceased to public fiction and contracted its fiction titles, I regained my rights to this book, and published it myself. The current cover, like all the others, was designed by Eric Beetner, and I like the imagery of sundown. It has a slightly apocalyptic feel, as well.
This would be my last River City novel for some time, as it would not be until 2018 that I released book five in the series, The Menace of the Years.
But that’s for another day. Today…Katie’s on scene.
And she’s going to handle things.
