At Their Own Game is the one of the first times in a novel that I tried to take on the antagonist as hero. I suppose Jake Stankovic, former disgraced cop turned criminal, is really only a half-step away from Stefan Kopriva, but it’s a significant distance all the same. Stankovic uses his inside knowledge of the system to build a small property crimes racket, to minimize his risks, and fly beneath the radar. At least, he did for a while…
This is one of my favorite first lines from any of my books. It is intriguing, and what follows gives us a picture of where Stankovic has been and is now in very short order.
Know what? I’m giving this one an A.

—————————————————————–
I thought At Their Own Game was a one-off, a stand alone. And for now, it is.
For now.
I have a book I’m revising now, IN THE CUT, that is already sold to Down and Out Books. IN THE CUT is set in the same world as At Their Own Game. Stankovic even has a small but important role. So while it isn’t a sequel, it is part of the same series. A full blown sequel is on the distant horizon, in which Stankovic deals with the man from Arizona (if you’ve read it, you know what that means. If you haven’t, then it isn’t a spoiler). And…there’s one even a little further on the horizon that will draw on elements of both At Their Own Game and IN THE CUT as part of a bigger story.
So, safe to say this won’t be the last you hear of Jake Stankovic.
Another reason you’ll hear from him again is that (about to spill a secret!), this novel will be migrated from my self published titles to the Down and Out Books catalog in September of 2019. The official announcement will come in a bit, but if you’re cool enough to be reading these blog posts, you deserve to hear it early.
At Their Own Game will remain available for a few more months before it will go dark, pending its re-issue under the Down and Out banner. This is similar to what occurred with Some Degree of Murder, which is being re-issued in March 2019.
One difference with At Their Own Game, though. Since it will be related to IN THE CUT, the untitled sequel, and the third, more expansive book I mentioned, my intention is for the covers to be thematically linked. I really like the cover Eric Beetner created for At Their Own Game, and barring any objection from the publisher, want to continue using it. The other three books would be done in the same style (hopefully by Eric, but if he’s not available, still adhering to style he used). The starkness of the cover has a look that really matches the story.
Lots going on, and this blog is where you’re going to hear most of it first…!
Speaking of hearing things, here’s what people have said about At Their Own Game:
