Now, if you’re a River City reader, you know who Thomas Chisolm is. This novel begins with his 2004 retirement, then jumps between his time in Vietnam and his time in retirement as the two intersect for one last adventurous journey for the veteran cop… one last debt to pay.

Chisolm is one of my favorite characters, and he’s an iconic one in River City lore. He’s also the only character I based loosely on a real person. That real person is Tom Chapman, and it is a photo of him that we used on the cover of this book. With Tom (Chisolm or Chapman, however you want to see it) in the foreground and the soldier with a haunted expression in the background, I think the cover captures what this story is about.

In the River City series proper, I just released Menace of the Years, set in 1999. The next book, Place of Wrath and Tears will be set in 2001 and the seventh entry, Dirty Little Town, happens in 2003…so Chisolm only has two more River City novels to go before he retires.

It’s been (and will be) a good run for the guy. My only real regret is that I’ve never honored Tom Chapman’s request to give Chisolm a girlfriend…but at least I think I gave him a little peace in Chisolm’s Debt.
