The highway sign gave her a choice, and Ania always believed in choices.
In one of her rare POV chapters, this first line of book two is from Ania herself, the seductive grifter who is the thread that weaves through this entire series.
After the events in Blood on Blood, Ania is headed to Vegas in Queen of Diamonds. That’s the choice she makes when presented with the above.
I think this is another strong opener, revealing the character a little bit and setting the state. Another B+ is my vote.

There is a lot of poker in this book, as both of the protagonists that Jim Wilsky and I wrote in a dual, first-person narrative with alternating chapters are poker players. Jim’s Cord is a world champion, and my Casey is a struggling local, but they’re both good players.
If you hate poker, this is still a book you’ll dig. If you like poker, you’ll dig it more. We present the card games, when they occur, in a way that’s accessible to anyone who doesn’t know a thing about poker, but with a nod to those who are into it.
This is the second Ania book, and this and Blood on Blood have two of my favorite epigrams of any of my novels. We quote Henry Miller in Blood on Blood, and Damon Runyon in this one. Not only do I like the quotes themselves, but they are such a perfect fit for the books.
A couple more random thoughts… this is one of the few books you’re going to read that has a Swedish mobster… and once again Zach McCain has killed it with the cover.
Oh, and this opening line (or any line, really) has the distinction of the only one I ever wrote on camera… in 2012, the local news did a piece on me — the whole “cop AND a writer” angle, which Robyn Nance (the reporter) did a great job featuring. They followed me around on the job, but always on a day off. I went to the library to write that day, and they filmed a snippet of it. This was the book Jim and I were just starting, so that’s what I wrote — this first chapter. You won’t see this line exactly, but if you look close, you will see lines from this first chapter of Queen of Diamonds.
