Lawrence Kelter's THE WHALE….

is out today!

The Whale by Lawrence Kelter is episode three of A Grifter’s Song, a twelve-part serial novella anthology series published by Down and Out Books that I created and am editing. I wrote the first episode in the series, and will write the final episode as well. But episodes 2-11 are written by different authors, each with their own take on these two grifters. Some choose first person narration, other’s third. Some elect to use Sam as the narrator, others Rachel. Some even select a third party viewpoint.

Each episode contains a completed story arc of a con that Sam and Rachel attempt to pull off. Meanwhile, lurking in the background, is the fact that they tried and failed to rip off the Philadelphia mob, and are essentially on the run.

Season One has six episodes, dropping the first of each month from January to June 2019. Season Two will follow the same pattern in 2020.

In addition to the uncommon narrative structure, it has a cool subscription model as well.

If you’ve followed the series, you’ve read about Sam and Rachel’s adventures in St. Louis in my series opener, The Concrete Smile, and in Raleigh in J.D. Rhoades‘s People Like Us.

Peter Keys is a multimillionaire real estate developer and the adventurer, who hasn’t been seen or heard from in over a decade. Because of his clandestine nature he is the stuff a con artist’s dreams are made from. Manhattan’s University Club is the spot where the brilliant, wealthy, and uber-accomplished rub their silk-clad elbows. Posing as Keys, Sam attempts to rope a man of incredible wealth into buying, of all things, a diamond mine.

Sam and his beautiful comrade Rachel begin working their con when it become clear that they’re not the only ones working a scam, but it’s unclear just which side of the con this interloper is on, a wrinkle that quickly turns this very complicated con into a nightmare. They’re playing for all the marbles on this one. With so much at stake will they come out on top or will the players become the ones who get played?

You can hear Lawrence Kelter talk about this novella in episode #32 of my podcast, Wrong Place, Write Crime. This open and shut episode explores The Whale and Larry’s other work.

Looking ahead, the rest of Season One has episodes from Gary Phillips, Colin Conway, and Jim Wilsky.

Looking to 2020, season Two includes Eryk Pruitt, Scott Eubanks, Asa Maria Bradley, Holly West, and Eric Beetner, and my own final episode.
