The 2018 cover was designed by Zach McCain, who also did the Down and Out Books titles for the Ania series and the forthcoming series, A Grifter’s Song.
The previous cover was a good one by Carl Graves, but I think this one is a much better match for the book itself. The Graves cover has something a a post-apocalyptic feel to it that I just could never get past. But at the time (January 2011), I was just beginning my journey into some of my titles being independently published (or self-published, if you’re still calling it that), and so I was not as savvy about the importance of a cover not just being good-looking but also being a thematic match for the book itself. Besides, Graves had just done the cover for Waist Deep, which is not only a great cover but is a thematic match for the novel. So I think I was a little hesitant to push for further revisions to get closer to what I really wanted.
In case you don’t know, The Last Horseman is about:
Sandy Banks is the last of the Four Horsemen, a vigilante group of ex-cops determined to right the injustices of a broken court system. But now the project is disintegrating, putting him in the middle of chaos. Betrayed by his final partner, blackmailed by the project head and pursued by federal agents bent on busting the case wide open, Sandy scrambles to escape this mayhem with his soul intact.
This is definitely a fast-moving book that is a fast read.
If you liked The Last Horseman, you’ll be glad to know that a sequel is percolating…I’d guess it’ll be here by 2020 at the latest.
Look at me, burying the lead.
