My short story “Adam Raised a Cain” appears in the third volume of Down & Out: The Magazine.
“Adam Raised a Cain” features Mick Sawyer, who is one of the two protagonists in the forthcoming first book of the Ania series, Blood on Blood. In the novel, Mick is a tainted ex-cop who reluctantly partners with Jerzy, his criminal half-brother, to find some diamonds their father once stole. The fact that Mick used to be a cop is prominently featured, but the reason for it is only hinted at.
The events that drove Mick off the job are central to this story.
But as the title implies, it is also a story about fathers and sons. The title itself is from a Springsteen song of the same name, and the song is very much about the darker aspects of the father/son relationship. Mick Sawyer certainly has a dark relationship with his father, and while Gar Sawyer never appears in this story (in real time, anyway), his presence looms large for Mick.
“Adam Raised a Cain” is kind of a prequel, or an origin story for Mick. It’s being released now, and then on April 30, Blood on Blood comes out (you can pre-order now). The remainder of the series will be released throughout 2018 — Queen of Diamonds in June, Closing the Circle in October, and the newest novel in the series, the prequel, Harbinger.
The Ania series was co-written with Jim Wilsky.
