SpoCompton Series Launches at Down & Out!
Down and Out Books announced today that they are launching my new series called The SpoCompton Series.
This is a series of inter-related novels with overlapping characters, all set in Spokane. I’m sure you have a few questions, so I’m here to answer them….
Why Spokane and not River City?
These are wholly different characters than those in River City. Also, River City starts in 1994 in Under a Raging Moon, and the one I’m writing now, Place of Wrath and Tears, is set in 2003. These SpoCompton series are roughly present day. Lastly, the focus of the SpoCompton series is on the criminal side of things rather than the law enforcement — essentially the opposite of River City.
Why SpoCompton?
Spokane, Washington, has long endured the undesirable nickname of “SpoCompton” (since the early 1990s), due to a perception of a similar crime rate to Compton, CA, and an influx of gangmembers from that area. I chose the name for the series to reflect how these novels explore the criminal perspective, as opposed to much of my crime fiction that features the law enforcement perspective.
Does that mean the cops are the bad guys in these books?
No. Well, not exactly. They do represent a natural antagonist for most of the protagonists in these books.
What books are in this series?
The first is At Their Own Game…

Then Jake must deal with a vengeful detective, a possible turncoat in his crew, and a woman from a long past affair who suddenly reappears. And Jake Stankovic used to be a cop. Now he must get his money back, keep the girl, and beat everyone involved…at their own game.
…which will be out in October 2019, and the second is In The Cut….
Boone’s quest to join the Iron Brotherhood outlaw motorcycle gang comes to a head after a dangerous encounter he faces on the club’s behalf. His reward comes with even greater danger, in the form of drugs, violence, and dark relationships. When the person who is the closest thing he has to family dies, Boone’s world explodes, and he learns what it really means to live life…in the cut.
…which comes out in January of 2020.
After that, I have at least two more planned. One is LIVE AND DIE THIS WAY, another Stankovic novel. The other, ALL THE MINOR KINGS, features a war between multiple gangs for the limited resources in the city.
[trivia tidbit: One of these titles comes from a lyric in a Tracy Chapman song. It’s a pretty well known song. The other comes from a Bruce Springsteen lyric in a rather obscure song. If you can name both without using Google, you’re awesome].
Wait. At Their Own Game has been out since 2015.
You are correct. Down and Out Books is re-issuing this title to jump-start the series. I wrote In the Cut in the same world, and it didn’t make sense for one to be under the D&O banner and not the other.
Does this mean my first edition copy is worth something?
Probably millions, if it’s mint.
How come this book isn’t a collaboration?
Hey, I write some on my own, too!
Should I read these in order?
All of the novels stand alone. They aren’t a series that needs to be read in order necessarily. For example, In the Cut isn’t a direct sequel to At Their Own Game. They are related, though, taking place in the same world with overlapping characters. LIVE AND DIE THIS WAY, on the other hand, is a direct sequel to At Their Own Game, and ALL THE MINOR KINGS takes place after the other three, so there is some time progression that takes place.
Who did the book covers?
Eric Beetner, of course.
Why not stick with River City?
I love River City. As a writer, I grew up with these characters, and I look forward to seeing where time takes them. But as my body of work shows, I also like to try different things. This is another way to explore the genre.
I only like River City.
Then you’re in luck. I’m working on #6 now (Place of Wrath and Tears). It should be out in August. Dirty Little Town (#7) will come out in either December or February/March of next year, depending on a variety of factors.
But in the meantime, I hope you’ll give SpoCompton a try.
