Top 5 Tuesday: Gritty Crime Dramas

In celebration of Blood on Blood’s release yesterday from Down & Out Books, this week’s Top 5 Tuesday is about gritty crime drama.

Here we go, in no particular order…

5. True Detective. Especially season 1, though I’m not a hater of season 2.  The mix of Harrelson and McConaughey in the first season, though…fantastic. And the philosophy sprinkled in liberally with the more traditional crime elements, all made for a great show.

4. Ozark. Not only was this Netflix series engaging, but Jason Bateman did not play a typical JB role, which was refreshing. I can’t count how many times I surprised by how his main character reacted, or what he did.

3. The Night Of. Proving that a short series can be powerful, this HBO offering was gritty, had a nice twist, took a look at racism, as well as some examination of the justice system. Wondering if the protagonist was guilty or not, and how his lawyer would react either way, made for compelling viewing.

2. Narcos. I think this one might have a shelf life that’s about to expire, though not because it isn’t excellent anymore. It’s just that the story itself seems to be naturally concluding, and it might run the risk of repeating itself. That said, I love the way it showed both sides of the conflict, and how it changed main protagonists for season 3.

1. The Wire. There just isn’t anything better. Not before, and not yet.
