This novel explores the explosive aftermath of a controversial police shooting in Spokane, WA. It also launches a four-book arc by Colin Conway and me, following the saga of Officer Tyler Garrett.

Colin and I talked about this book in an interview with The Big Thrill and on the podcast Authors of the Pacific Northwest.

But don’t just take our word for it…

“Riveting and compulsively readable, Charlie-316 is an ambitious book about many things including honor, the murkiness of politics, corruption, and a good man searching for the truth. Any fan of Don Winslow’s critically-acclaimed The Force needs to be searching out and reading this book.”
—Dave Zeltserman, author of Small Crimes

A Grifter’s Song!

The first season of A Grifter’s Song wraps up with Jim Wilsky’s Losing Streak. This series is about a pair of Grifter’s (Sam and Rachel) who are devoted to each other. As they travel across the country running cons, they are pursued by the mobsters they tried to scam. Each episode is a complete story, but there is a series-arc that will continue into season two.

If you subscribe to the series, you not only get a price break, but also an additional bonus story for subscribers only. I wrote that bonus story, and the title has been kept secret but I’m going to share it with you. Don’t tell anyone.

Technically episode #6.5, and bridging season one and season two, the bonus episode is called Come the Apocalypse. Instead of following Sam and Rachel, the story is from the point of view of Rocco, the mobster given the task of finding them and killing them as vengeance for their attempted con. The story is interwoven with the previous six tales, and Rocco will appear again as the season two bonus story (episode #11.5) for subscribers only.

Season two will have Eryk Pruitt, Scott Eubanks, Asa Maria Bradley, Holly West, and Eric Beetner, as well as me again (episode #12, Down Comes the Night).  Season two begins in January 2020.

River City #6 is Coming!
I am hard at work on the sixth River City novel. What’s it about?

It is the nightmare of every community – a school shooting.
When a disturbed teenager masterminds this terrible event, everyone in River City is plunged into the darkness that surrounds it. The students and teachers try to survive, and the men and women of RCPD try to save them. But when things go horribly wrong, everyone seems to be looking elsewhere for someone to blame.
Officer Katie MacLeod is among many who discover that the nightmare doesn’t end when the shooting stops.

Certainly, I’m not shying away from controversy here, as these terrible events happen all too often in our country. One even occurred in Spokane, the thinly veiled inspiration for River City. And while my intention isn’t necessarily to come down on any one side of the the political questions involved, I do want to explore the impact such an event has on police officers, victims, and a community.

I am projecting an August or September release for Place of Wrath and Tears.

What’s Up For Season Three?

You may not know this, but I host a weekly podcast. I interview crime fiction authors (mostly) about their work (mostly). It’s cool because I get to interview my friends and colleagues, as well as a few bigger names (Christopher Moore, author of Lamb, or Steve Hamilton, author of Exit Strategy, for example).

As the show has evolved, I’ve made format changes to create a better end result. As season two winds down, I’m at a crossroads. What should season three look like? All short form interviews of 8-15 mins? Go back to only long form monthly interviews of around an hour? A hybrid? Keep or drop the book reviews? The flash forward interview?

This is where I could use your help. Please consider taking this short survey (2-3 mins) and include your thoughts on what direction Wrong Place, Write Crime should take for season three.

Summer Vacation!

I’m a lucky guy. I get to go to Ireland this July, along with my wife. We’re going to spend almost two weeks on Eire, so if you have been there and have any ‘gotta see it’ things to share, fire me an email at frankzafiro@msn.com.

I’ll be back by mid-July, and will be sure to let you know how it went in the next newsletter.

Thanks for being part of this journey!

TELL A FRIEND!  If you have any friends or family that like mysteries (and free stuff), please share this newsletter with them so that they can sign up as well. Or share the link below. You’d be helping me out, so thank you.
